What's Happening

During the past four decades all Presidential Administrations have declared war on drugs! At least two National Certification Boards for Alcohol/Drug Counselors have been created. Each state has a Certification Board and some require Licensure to legally practice counseling in substance abuse treatment. There are at least hundreds if not thousands of centers, facilities and hospitals that implement a wide range of treatment modules including Therapeutic Communities, Psychiatric Hospitals, Out-Patient Treatment, and Methadone Clinics for Heroin Addiction and more recent Faith-Based Incentive Programs. Billions of U.S. dollars have been invested and spent on the so-called War on Drugs via National and State Funds as well as in the Private Sector. Most of the facts stated can also be applied to Central and South American countries not to mention European nations. After so many resources have been implemented and utilized, why is Drug Addiction on a National and World bases worse?

An answer cannot be singular when there is a never ending list of elements in the War on Drugs including Politics, Economics, Law Enforcement, Public Demand among many others. The professionals that collaborate in the Addictive Disorders/Substance Abuse field are an extraordinary and talented group of Specialists too often under-rated. The front-line soldiers in this war. They are a unique breed with limit-less resources, capabilities with an impressive commitment to their calling. Daily they face high degrees of stress in peculiar situations resulting in anxiety, frustration and 'Burn-Out-Syndrome' more often than the rewards their unique careers can provide. Complications increase while providing treatment to clients/patients for Chemical Dependency, they themselves are in recovery and possibly have an immediate family member abusing drugs. Now what? How to manage these circumstances? What alternatives or services can be provided for them?

Continued Education classes/conferences are provided mainly to qualify for re-certification requirements and are usually presented in a traditional manner addressing customary topics with possibly updated information that appears to be impressive on a curriculum vitae/resume. The speakers usually present their conferences with the same voice tone from beginning to end as they address this intellectual audience which retains the information communicated at a minimal degree. What is learned to make a difference or to improve the quality of their careers?

What new techniques can be taught to motivate clients/patients to seek, be more receptive and complete treatment?
